The USS Constitution was the first ship built by the United States. George Washington himself gave the ship its name and Paul Revere added the copper inlays. It was built in the shipyards of Charleston, South Carolina and constructed largely of live oak. The construction made the ship heavier but almost “bulletproof” to the solid shot cannon balls of its day. During the War of 1812, the USS Constitution was in a battle with the British Royal Navy’s HMS Guerriere. During that battle, the British ship’s cannon shells bounced right off, leading to the sailors nicknaming the USS Constitution “Old Ironsides.” This is my artistic interpretation of the battle between the USS Constitution and HMS Guerriere. It’s impossible to know exactly how it all went down, and precisely what all the details were, but that’s what makes history fun to paint! We don’t know, because we weren’t there, so we let our imaginations roam free! I hope you love this patriotic piece!
